Covered

Covered is a subscription nappy and care essentials service built on a simple promise: the logistics are handled so customers never have to think about them. I led naming, brand strategy, and direction, overseeing brand design by Florian Charnace, then built the entire Shopify store and commerce system myself.

The brief

Covered came in without a name. The business idea was clear: a subscription service that delivers nappies and care essentials to parents, NDIS users and carers, and older adults, removing the mental load of tracking and restocking. I led naming strategy and brand direction, worked with Florian Charnace who handled brand design and delivered the final assets, then built the entire Shopify store and commerce system myself.

The problem space

Subscription commerce in sensitive categories carries a hidden UX problem. The logistics are the product, but talking directly about nappies or incontinence care feels clinical at best and stigmatising at worst. Most competitors overcorrect in one direction or the other: aggressively bright and cute (works for parents, alienates everyone else) or sterile and medical (precise but cold).

Three customer cohorts had meaningfully different needs: Gen Z and millennial parents who want convenience and value, NDIS users and carers navigating a complex funding system, and older adults who want dignity and discretion. One name, one visual language, and one tone had to hold for all three.

Naming and positioning

Naming strategy came first. I mapped territories around relief, protection, continuity, and care, evaluated candidates against memorability, domain viability, and scalability, and stress-tested each for tone across the three cohorts.

“Covered” landed because it works practically and emotionally at the same time. Being covered means your supply is handled. It also carries warmth without softening into something cutesy. The word holds for parents and for NDIS carers without forcing either to feel like they’re using a product designed for someone else.

From there I set the positioning and tone brief that would carry through the whole project: direct, reassuring, mature, and practical.

Brand identity

With naming and positioning locked, I briefed Florian Charnace on the visual direction and oversaw the brand design work. The brief was clear: the system needed to hold across digital, packaging, and print, and the personality had to land somewhere between polished healthcare and warm consumer without sliding into either extreme.

Florian delivered a complete identity: wordmark, logo lockups, typography, colour palette, icon marks, and full export packages (SVG, PNG, light and dark variations, horizontal lockups, social formats). Having the brand fully resolved before I touched the Shopify build meant I had clear decisions to implement against rather than making visual calls mid-build.

The build

I built the Shopify store myself end to end: every page, product setup, configuration, and brand application. Core pages covered home, products, collections, about, FAQs, NDIS support, account, cart, and checkout. I configured product variants, collections, tags, SEO fields, discount structure, and shipping logic, then applied the Florian-designed brand system across typography, colour, buttons, layout, product pages, and trust messaging.

The product and subscription strategy was also mine. I structured the catalogue around the three cohorts from the start: parents, adults, and NDIS customers each have distinct entry points, but the underlying catalogue and subscription logic is shared so the business does not have to maintain separate product lines. I set up subscription flows to let customers pause, skip, and change frequency, and mapped the roadmap for future upgrades: subscription portals, NDIS automation, reviews, loyalty, and email automation.

Outcome

Covered went from an unnamed idea to a complete brand and commerce system. The name has emotional resonance and holds across all three customer cohorts. The visual identity is production-ready and documented. The Shopify store is built to launch and structured to support future upgrades: subscription portals, NDIS automation, review flows, loyalty, and email sequences.

The brand positioning centres on discretion, dignity, and convenience rather than embarrassment or category stigma, and that thread runs through every touchpoint from the name to the checkout.

Reflection

The sequencing mattered. Naming came first, then positioning, then the brand brief to Florian, then the build. By the time I opened Shopify, every visual decision was already made and every message already tested against the three cohorts. That order kept the build clean and fast.

The other thing this project reinforced: in a sensitive category, the brand decisions upstream of the store do more work than any feature inside it. The reason Covered does not feel clinical or cutesy is because of a name and a tone brief, not a Shopify theme. Building the whole stack meant I could hold that thread from the first naming workshop through to the checkout page copy.
